The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS): A Guide for Welsh Businesses, Charities and the Public Sector

The evolution of the electric vehicle (EV) market has led to an increased demand for accessible charging infrastructure. Recognising this need, the UK Government introduced the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) to facilitate businesses, charities, and public sector organisations in setting up charging points.

About the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

The WCS is a forward-thinking initiative by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and is administered by the DVLA. Its primary aim is to provide financial support towards the upfront costs associated with purchasing and installing EV charge points. Here’s what businesses need to know:

The WCS is accessible for organisations in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. However, it excludes the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Under the WCS, successful applicants can retrieve up to 75% of the total costs (inclusive of VAT) for purchase and installation. This support is capped at £350 per socket, with a maximum limit of 40 sockets across all sites for each applicant.

The WCS grant can work in tandem with the EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets. However, it's crucial to ensure no duplication of claims on the same charge point to avoid fraudulent implications.

How Does the WCS Work?

The scheme is open to businesses, charities, and public sector organisations that adhere to specific criteria.

Applicants use an online form. Successful candidates receive a unique identification voucher code via email.

Once in possession of the voucher, EV-Wales, will initiate the installation process.

Post installation, EV-Wales would claim the grant amount from OZEV on behalf of the applicant. This claim should be made within six months from the voucher's issue date.

The value of the voucher is discounted from the applicant’s final invoice.

Change in Rules: OZEV holds the discretion to modify the rules or terminate the scheme. However, they aim to provide up to four weeks’ notice for any changes.

The scheme is tailored for off-street parking dedicated to staff and/or fleet use. While customer parking isn't covered under the WCS, provisions are available for local residents to use the facility outside working hours.

Grant Eligibility and Application

For a smooth application process, organisations must meet specific criteria. Eligible applicants should:

Be a registered businesses, charity, or part of the public sector.

Declare the need or intention to promote EV uptake amongst staff or fleet.

Be situated within the scheme's geographical scope and possess dedicated off-street parking.

Have ownership of the property or acquire landlord consent for installations.

Conclusion

The Workplace Charging Scheme offers an excellent opportunity for businesses to promote sustainable practices and contribute to the UK's green transition. EV-Wales, as a trusted EV installer in Wales, is equipped to help organisations navigate this scheme and benefit from the available financial incentives. Embracing this scheme not only resonates with a commitment to environmental sustainability but also aligns with the nation's vision of a cleaner, greener future.
